Gary Bronson's A FIRST BOOK OF C++, Fourth Edition, takes a hands-on, applied approach to the first programming language course for students studying computer science. The book begins with procedural programming in C, and then gradually introduces object-oriented programming features and the C++ language syntax that enables first-time programmers to use them.

This book is extremely helpful. I am learning C++ with no experience in anything other than the most basic Java programming. My current professor isn't the greatest lecturer but this book fills in the gaps he leaves in his teaching. The text does well in explaining how different statements work and where they are best used. It also includes sections with practice questions and common programming errors to look for while you write your own code. Some things could use more explanation but it isn't hard to find the answers to most questions on the internet since C/C++ is so widely used. I definitely would not have an A in my programming class without this book.Edit: Things are getting more complicated and I realize this book does not have nearly enough examples and doesn't take into account some important topics so I find myself searching the internet for hours just for an answer.
If you are new to programming, this is the perfect book to learn C++. Bronson covers C++ in detail in the first nine chapters, and once you have a firm grasp on the language, he then introduces object oriented programming in the last six chapters. I find this approach very effective, because if you don't have a firm grasp on C++ syntax and programming logic, then teaching OOP right at the beginning only confuses and makes learning more difficult. If you have not mastered/fully covered the syntax and logic, then you will be running into errors and difficulties not only from the OOP side of things while you try to learn that programming paradigm, you will also be struggling just to keep from making syntax/logic errors. With Bronson's approach, you first cover all the basics, then jump into object oriented programming. Another thing I love about Bronson is that when showing a program as an example of a concept, he never includes something in his program that has not been covered without explaining it. Some programming books I have used have had code snippets that were never covered, which makes learning very difficult. Not so with Bronson. I'd give it six stars if I could.
Mos text books, I tune out part way through each chapter. This one is not as dry and explains coding structure very clearly. Granted, I took several programming languages when I first started school several years ago (going back to finish my degree after a 10 year hiatus), so it's not a brand new subject for me.However, I've also had to dredge through several other programming texts and can say this is one of the best ones yet. Some of the things that didn't really click the first time around are finally falling into place due to this text.
This book gives any programming newcomer a super-solid introduction into the world of C++. More importantly, the author presents it very well, which definitely helps the learning process when trying to tackle the more difficult subjects. I had this book for a class, and I was able to easily pick up C++ beginner/intermediate coding thanks to the solid foundation this book gave me. I even decided to keep it around for reference because the author is very clear and precise when explaining topics, both of which a programmer will appreciate.
The price was very good, and it shipped in very good time. But after opening the textbook 2-3 times I found that spines already separating from the spine of the book. Very unhappy with this.
this book is very well written, its great for beginners or as a refresher. the chapters take you step by step ,with instructions and explanations along the way. if you posses strong math skills, along with downloading a good compiler (c++ interpreter,, app + like BloodShed) and this book, you can teach "Your Self" how to code in c++. roni ruelas, computer sciences major
Again a required textbook for a college class. Book is highly over priced, outrageously expensive for students on a tight budget.
